Sojern Analyses Travel Intentions to Rio Olympics as AP Region Catches 'Games Fever'

Scripted by Sojern, the May edition of the VE Bulletin series reveals the ‘Games fever’ stimulated by the upcoming Rio Olympic Games in APAC and the deeper implications behind it. Japan, Australia and Thailand, supported by data in terms of the searching rate of Olympics- related topics and the percentage change before and during the Games, are proved to be the top three markets showing the highest levels of interest in attending this major global sporting event.
Despite the distances to be travelled from most APAC origin markets to Brazil, most would-be visitors are likely to choose longer stays in Brazil in order to maximise the opportunities to explore this south American country. Specifically, more than 50 percent prefer a stay in Rio de Janeiro of at least 12 days and a significant portion will be there for six to 11 days. The most popular dates of departure for Rio are the first 12 days of August.
For alternative destinations during the Olympic period, different markets present interesting and varied characteristics. Climate appears to be a major determining factor for Australian and Japanese tourists who are researching destinations that promise warm and welcoming weather. Travellers from Singapore and Hong Kong SAR appear more inclined to make short-haul trips – and that’s good news for many regional destinations in Northeast and Southeast Asia.
